Mind Fog

A Guest Post

Mind Fog,

Some days are just not clear. You have Mind Fog. And in today’s anxiety filled world, that is not a good place to be in. I was prompted to create this post because I had one of those long seemingly valueless days. So, I took my medicine, 3 beers, and 2 scotches, and started to write.

The Internet mass of business systems, techniques, email list, CPA, products, JV’s, Panda & Penguins, followers and likes, social media, social proof, is enough to make anyone drink. I spent most of the day bouncing from topic to topic, except at one point I got hooked on a problem that lured me in like a trap and couldn’t let go of me.

And before I knew it, I fell victim of wasting my time and energy. Nothing seemed to help me, I was fixated on a minor problem, and a technical one at that which didn’t really matter much anyway. I needed a way out, but nothing seemed to alleviate the head banging,

Finally, I realized that if I stay here making no headway, the mind fog would completely ruin my day and even my life. So, I quickly decided and knew I needed to clear the view and nail it.

The result? This quick little article, like a warning on a bottle of beer or pack of cigarettes, that you can post on your site beware of mind fog: It reads as follows:

***************** WARNING *******************
Reading this material may cause a condition known as Mind Fog.
Proceed with caution, even this warning could be hazardous to your well being
and distract you from doing something much more important. Mind Fog can
lead to paralyzes of creative energy, buggy eyes, blank stares, deftness, loss of
appetite, and yearning for more mind numbing material along with a sore ass.
Mind Fog is a trap, do not fall into the zone of unproductive energy. A good
example would be you reading this warning. It is MIND FOG. It gets you
NO PLACE. It is degenerative, demoralizing, disgusting, and downright worthless.
Why then not heed this warning and STOP the fog.
***************END OF WARNING*****************

There you have it. The cure to mind fog is reading this warning and realizing you may be wasting your time with unproductive activity. Mind Fog is real, people all over the Internet and in real life experience it all the time. We are even addicted to it, but beware, it will and can lead to unproductive activity. As a good measure and suggestion, copy and paste this warning anywhere you can refer to it time and time again.

Step by Step – On the Way to Your Goal

A Goal – Yes You Have One

Even if you don’t think you do, you have goals. Think about it this way. Every time you get out of bed, every time you open your mouth, each time you head to the store, when you go to school, or to work – in each and every instance you have goals.

If you think of it in that context, we all already have goals in our life, so moving on to the next step is not a huge leap. The next step is setting a goal or several goals for yourself, for your life and for your future.

We can talk about how to choose your goals another time, but what about the goals you already have that you aren’t reaching? The mistake we all make comes down to a lack of focus, or perhaps, focused effort. We forget the real life consequences of two major laws/principles. Specifically, ‘Cause and Effect‘ and ‘Opportunity Cost.’

We reach our goals one step at a time. That is, one step forward.

But what about the other steps we take?

Let’s face it – we don’t usually walk straight at our goal, step after step after step. We all know the old saw “one step forward, two steps back” because that is how we live our lives.

But how does that relate to our journey? Remember, we are on the way to a goal, right?

What does it mean?

Let’s over – simplify what is going on. Your goal is to walk from A to B, it is a trip of only twenty feet and you take steps of approximately two feet at a time. Okay, really simple then. Just ten steps and you will reach your goal. So, do you walk straight over there – straight to your goal?

Remember now, this is a simplified example……In real life, when moving toward your real goal to you actually walk right over? Ten straight steps in a row toward your goal? No, you don’t. I don’t – we do not. We move forward, backward and sideways. We walk in circles,

but we almost never walk, step after step straight to our goal. We just don’t tend to live that way.

On the Way to Your Goal

Okay, point made, now let’s take a look at how the two Laws apply here.

  • Cause and Effect: Everything you do or don’t do is a cause and has some effect on your life – whether it is the one you wanted or not.
  • Opportunity Cost: Everything that you do stops you from doing something else. If you are walking in a circle you obviously are not moving forward.

When you are walking toward that goal (point B) you are either moving forward or you are not. It seems so simple, so obvious, and yet in the day to day most of us miss it.

Only the steps forward are helping you get there. Every step that is not forward, is stopping you from reaching your goal. Sure, you know that the steps backward are moving you away from the goal, but all those sideways steps and those going in circles are actively holding you back from your goals.

Everything you do is either moving you forward or holding you back. Every second, minute, hour, day, week and month that you spend that is not working toward your goal is preventing you from achieving it. Each thing that you do, each thing you spend time on, everything that you spend mental energy on: everything in your life, is either moving you toward your goals, or holding you back.

When you approach it from that perspective, how you spend your time and energy takes on a different and much more serious aspect. An associate of mine created a graphic that may help you think ‘righter’ about reaching your goals.

Graphic created by Kelly McCausey at Solo Smarts. Thanks Kelly, I love it! Check out her site for lots of great info, podcasts and more.

Success = Happiness = Free Enterprise?

If you are past the juvenile idea that Success means having material wealth, congratulations! After you’ve been around and seen all sides of the issue we come to realize that the only genuine Success in this world is Happiness.

Of course many people think that Pleasure is the same thing as Happiness, another beginner’s mistake. So then where does Happiness come from? I have found the main source of Happiness stems from Family. But for many people that either isn’t their experience. And even if it is, we all need to experience Success out in the workplace: that is, in the rest of our existence outside of our time with Family.

I think you will find some surprising insights in this video from Prager University.

Makes you think, doesn’t it?

You Are Not Special

About a week ago I first heard about this commencement speech. Many people online seemed outraged over it, and I’ll admit I had mixed feelings when reading/listening to snippets from it.

But now, having watched it all the way through, I feel that it is one of the very best and most realistic speeches of its type that I have ever heard. I urge you to pay close attention to what is being said here, and then read my further comments below the video.

Forty five years ago when I graduated high school, and even twenty some years past when my children did the same, this speech would have never happened. Not only that – it would have been meaningless if it had.

Because it is only in the last two decades that we have somehow moved into the trap of encouraging false self esteem. There is no value in the trophy when everyone gets one. We demean accomplishment when we praise it’s lack with equal fervor.

You are not special – until you make yourself so. You are not a winner until you work hard enough to win. You are not a leader until you step out of your comfort zone, take the lead, and others follow you.

Being special is the result of work, intent, effort and the like. You are not special by birth, or unearned social position or even by desire. It is all up to you. You lift yourself above the masses by one thing only – striving to be the best you that you can be, by actually ‘leaving it all on the field.’

What About Profit?

Do you understand Economics, Money and Profit? The Key to Winning in the mind of most people centers around money. And yet more and more in the world today we hear about ‘sharing the wealth’ and the ‘evils of capitalism.’ While communism/socialism has failed the world over it is still be promoted as the right way to go, right here and right now.

So, it’s back to the basics for all of us, in order to get it right.

Food for thought, eh?

Do You Give Yourself Permission To Succeed?

Here is another great video/audio selection from Les Brown. He always hits points that mean something to me personally – I hope he gets through to you too.

How Long Will You Try?

When is the battle over? Will you stop trying when you get tired? When you get discouraged? After you have been knocked down 5 times? Ten?

When will you give up on your success? What will you go or give to win?

It is not over till you win. What does that really mean? How many times do you need to get up when you are getting knocked down? There is one very simple answer.

You only need to get up once, once more than you get knocked down. And that’s the only truth you need to know.

Are You Ready For The Future?

It’s a new year, and no, I did not make any resolutions. I have found that it is nearly a tradition to break a New Years resolution. What works for me is having regularly viewed goals and a work plan to achieve them.

Have no goals? Don’t have an actual plan? Well then you might as well make a bunch of New Years resolutions because that has as much a chance of helping you move forward in life as No Goals and No Plan.

Ok, so you have written goals, and you have a viable work plan to achieve them. That will not automatically grant you success. You still have to BEGIN. Perhaps you have heard, “Well begun is half done.”

I am the proud owner of a 1980 set of cassette recordings by Zig Ziglar entitled, “How To Stay Motivated.” Not everybody likes Zig. My wife likes what he says but doesn’t like to listen to his voice. But to me the way he tells a story goes a long way toward making his point sink inĀ  to genuine effect. One of my favorites is this piece called ‘cooked in the squat.’

Cooked In The Squat

Remember, your future begins today – not tomorrow!

Read Immediately!

URGENT: 48 hours left to insure a Happy New Year

Years ago I learned about Positive Thinking, the Laws of Attraction and the
Mastermind Principle. Those who know me well, will agree without hesitation
that the application of this knowledge changed me tremendously. And those
changes saved my marriage, my relationship with my children and quite
possibly my life.

I’ve read all the books and the things that make it all work right are Mentoring
and Association. My previous sources are not available in my life right now. I
am excited to share with you another source I have discovered and am
availing myself of.

A Mastermind Group and teaching, led online by Mark Hendricks. Here is
what he recently wrote to me:

“Many people take time to think about the past year this
week and how they’re going to make next year better. Here’s
how I have helped others and I’d be honored if you’d allow
me to help you too… (I guarantee this will make a huge
difference in your life):

The REAL Secret – Ultimate Success Program

And remember…The special offer I’ve made also disappears after
January 1st, so take advantage of it while you can.”

The special offer? Normally membership in this group costs $10
a month or a one time payment of $97. Through 1-1-12 Mark is
taking on new members in the Ultimate Success Program for a
one time payment of $19.70.

I am already doing this – won’t you join me?

In my opinion this is well worth it at full price, so if you miss
the special deal you might want to still consider it. But if you
are like me – hey, do it now and save the money!

Go Ahead, Change Yourself

I am all about the Power of Attitude. Let’s face it, there simply can not be anything like positive thinking if your attitude stinks. And yet, even the most forward thinking person has times when they struggle to maintain a good posture.

So, when you are down and want or need to be up – what the heck can you do about it? Well, there is a remarkably simple process you can use yourself…..on yourself, that can shift your attitude easier than you may have thought possible.

Michael Hyatt, on his great blog Intentional Leadership has written a short but powerful piece on “How a Shift in Your Vocabulary Can Instantly Change Your Attitude.” Click the title to read it.

I have not located the original source for the following quote yet, but our words truly do have tremendous power. And it is a power we can use if we know how.

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

Change your words – change your world.
